A long, refreshing cocktail with a hint of herbaceous bitterness. This is based on the 1980s favourite the Sea Breeze. That version of the Sea Breeze is vodka, cranberry and grapefruit, and supposedly the result of a marketing push by Ocean Spray, the cranberry growers’ collective. The 53 Breeze is less breezy and easy going, with quite a bit more character.

A long, cooling cocktail featuring rum, damson gin and grapefruit. Created June 2022.

Ingredients

  • 25ml golden rum

  • 25ml damson gin

  • 50ml pink grapefruit juice

  • 5ml (1 tsp) Orgeat

  • 5ml (1 tsp) Select or Aperol

  • Fresh thyme leaves

  • Sparkling water

Directions

  • Shake first 6 ingredients with ice and strain into a highball glass
  • Top with sparkling water and stir
  • Garnish with fresh thyme
