LLM cocktail in a glass

LLM cocktail: Laphroaig, Lemon, Maraschino

Given the rapid, recent rise of AI large language models (LLMs) like the GPT model behind ChatGPT, it seems only fitting that the last in this series of TechnoCocktails should be an LLM:

  • L for Laphroaig
  • L for Lemon
  • M for Maraschino

It’s a tasty, sour, smoky cocktail, with the unmistakeable bold peatiness of the Islay whisky.

Thanks to Colin for this suggestion: it is based on a classic whisky sour template. Traditionally that might be an 8:3:4 ratio between strong (whisky), sour (lemon) and sweet (usually a sugar syrup). In the Cocktail Codex they’d classify this category as daquiris, since a rum-based daquiri follows the same template as a whisky-based sour. A whisky sour would normally be made with bourbon, the notes of vanilla and spice blending with lemon (as opposed to a daquiri, where the rum is mixed with lime). The mighty, peaty Laphroaig from Islay gives the LLM a much smokier flavour. And in our case, we’re using Maraschino cherry liqueur (made from small, sour Marasca cherries), which provides sweetness but not as much as sugar syrup. Similar drinks would be the Smoky Whisky Sour or the Smoke and Mirrors. However, this recipe was a triumph, would recommend a try.

Zingy, tasty, smoky whisky sour cocktail.

Ingredients

  • 25ml Laphroaig whisky (or other peaty Islay whisky)

  • 12.5ml Freshly squeezed lemon juice

  • 10ml Maraschino liqueur

Directions

  • Add all the ingredients to your cocktail shaker with a handful of ice and shake vigorously
  • Strain and serve with more ice, and optionally a maraschino cherry garnish

Notes

  • I used the 10 year old Laphroaig
  • I’m using a 10:5:4 ratio as I like the sourness, but you could reduce the lemon juice.

The alternative LLM recipe still to explore would be to use Lillet Blanc (a French aromatised wine aperitif), Lemon or Lime, and Mezcal. See if you prefer that!
