CODE cocktail in a glass

CODE cocktail: Cognac, Orgeat, Damson, Elderflower

Yet another TechnoCocktail: having done DATA we’re now doing CODE. It is code that runs the world, but have you ever drunk any? Now’s your chance. This has a balance of strength from the cognac or brandy and sweetness from the damson gin, with just a hint of almond flavour from the orgeat and floral notes from the elderflower.

  • C for Cognac
  • O for Orgeat
  • D for Damson gin
  • E for Elderflower liqueur

It doesn’t quite follow the Old Fashioned template (the pattern behind many cocktails), as it is lacking bitters. An alternative that works is to swap orgeat for orange bitters (that still begins with O), but I prefer this version.

However there is another excellent combination, that I judged less interesting than the main recipe below: equal parts Cherry (Maraschino), Damson gin and St German, with a ¼ measure of Orgeat. Still CODE, but more fruity and lightweight.

Strong but balanced cocktail on the theme of CODE: Cognac, Orgeat, Damson and Elderflower.

Ingredients

  • 50ml Cognac or alternative brandy

  • 25ml Damson gin or sloe gin

  • 6ml (just over a UK 5ml teaspoon) Orgeat almond syrup

  • 6ml (just over a UK 5ml teaspoon) Elderflower liqueur

Directions

  • Add all the ingredients to a tall glass or cocktail shaker full of ice and stir thoroughly
  • Serve in a coupe garnished with a maraschino cherry

Notes

  • I used St Germain for the elderflower liqueur. Seven Tails is an innovative blend of Cognac, Armagnac and brandy, finished in port casks, and works wonderfully in cocktails.
